Abstract

The fast rate of urbanization in Bangladesh has resulted in massive generation of municipal solid wastes that has provided serious and hazardous environmental and health threats to the population. Conventional waste management practices are usually inefficient and fail to provide real time monitoring as well as fail to promote proper waste segregation which increases pollution and waste of resources. The aim of this paper is to assess the viability and acceptance of an AI-powered smart waste management system that includes the real-time monitoring options and facilitates sustainable waste disposal habits. To gather first-hand data, a structured survey was carried out on 143 residents of different ages, professions, and families. The questionnaire included the data about the daily amount of waste, waste sorts, and the ways of waste disposal, knowledge of AI-powered waste management systems, and intentions to use smart bins. The responses were analyzed to show that the majority of the households produce 1–5 kg of waste per day, mostly organic and recyclable, with a minor percentage being hazardous. Awareness of smart waste management technologies was relatively low, but most participants acknowledged the importance of proper waste segregation and expressed willingness to participate in programs involving AI-powered smart bins with real-time sensors. These results demonstrate that people are prepared to accept AI-based solutions, which can enhance collection efficiency, boost recycling, reduce unlawful dumping, and support sustainable urban growth in Bangladesh. The findings are valuable.
