Assessing Climate-Induced Migration and Adaptive Capacity in Vulnerable Regions of Bangladesh

Abstract
"Abstract Bangladesh is considered a hotspot for the adverse effects of climate change. Country’s char, coastal and hoar areas are facing severe disasters such as floods, droughts, river erosion and cyclones. As a result, people are moving from villages to cities, which is increasing the population in cities also increasing risks. Their adaptive capacity is helping them cope with the adverse effects of climate change and adapt to the changing environment. This study aims to measure the impact of climate change on migration patterns in vulnerable regions and evaluate the adapted capacity. The research is for identifying the environmental factors behind migration and challenges faced by migrated population due to climate-induced. The study based on quantitative research approach using annual secondary data from 1995 to 2024. The data is Collected from World Development Indicators (WDI). In this study, we use several variables whose are net migration, population growth rate, urban population growth rate, forest area percentage, CO₂ emissions per capita, and GDP per capita. Ms Excel was used to perform Trend analysis, Descriptive statistical analysis, and Correlation analysis of the selected variables. The average net migration of Bangladesh is -795525.667 (SM.POP.NETM) referred that more people emigrated from the country than immigrated into it. In 1996 minimum, CO2 was emission was 0.176886229 and the max was 0.715539344 (EN.GHG.C02.PC.CE.AR5) that’s in 2024. The trend analysis disclosed a steady increase in GDP per capita (NY.GDP.PCAP.CD) year to year, suggesting sustained economic development. The correlation analysis disclosed a very strong positive relationship between population growth rate and forest area percentage (r = 0.965), indicating that the two variables moved in the same direction during the study period. The study highlights the connection nature of migration, environment change, economic development and sustainable development policies for climate adaptation. "
