Demographic Transition, Migration, and Sustainable Urbanization in Bangladesh

Abstract

"Demographic transition and Urban Development are a continuous running process of Bangladesh, but this concerns about Sustainability on urbanization pathway. However, Bangladesh’s birth rate is getting less by years. For the thinking of better living people are migrating. Development of a country depends on urban growth and migration dynamics. This research is done to find if demographic transition, migration and urbanization has inter-relationship and how this affects in sustainable urbanization for a better future. This study was conducted with a secondary dataset period of 1995 to 2024, which was collected from Bangladesh national annual observation from World Bank Data360 WDI, variables include Total Population, Growth Rate of Population, Net Migration, GDP per Capita, Population rate of Urban, Life Expectancy, Urban Slum Share. Excel file was used to analyzing dataset using correlational and trend analysis method. The study showed that, in the period 1995 to 2024, Population of urban areas raised from 21.7% to 32.7% however Growth Rate of Population slowed from 1.86% to 1.21%. The Population Rate of Urban showed Strong Positive correlation with Life Expectancy (r=0.99), GDP per Capita (r=0.90), and Urban Slum Share of (-0.998). Net Migration result moderate, but not strongly correlated with urbanization. From the study it is achieved Life Expectancy is Strongly correlates with Urbanization and GDP per Capita is raising per year, which mirrors on the result of Urban Slum Share. On the pathway to Sustainable Urbanization, government have to lower slum count, more planned housing, invest in sub-city development and easier migration for intensive growth. "
